Psalms 52:4 - "You love all devouring words, you deceitful tongue." NKJV
People love to trash talk. Trash talking is putting someone else down to make ourselves look good. It berates someone that doesn't have the ability that others have, discourages people from pursuing their dreams, slanders people or their family members
Trash talking uses words to inflict hurt, anger and suffering on others. The word devour means swallow up; eat ravenously. 2. Consume; destroy. 3. Absorb; take in, as a book. Some use a deceitful tongue to speak words that eat at the souls, hearts and minds of people.
Trash talking is used in the sports world as athletes try and intimidate their opponents with words that will make someone angry and lose control or to cower with fear when they approach. Today, it's not uncommon to see children on playgrounds, in neighborhoods and in churches using words to hurt and embarrass other children. Where are they getting their examples? Parent, teachers, sports heroes, the list is endless.
What's the point, you may ask?
When God created mankind He put a tongue in our mouths to enable us to communicate with each other and to communicate with Him, for us to use the tongue to instruct, encourage, guide and love. The tongue was not meant to be a weapon of hurt and destruction. How can we control the tongue? I have said things in anger to people that I love knowing that it was going to hurt them, because I would never hit them. But words hurt more than the punch of a fist.
God began to speak to my heart that I was wrong and guilt would come because of what I did. I asked God how I could control my tongue and He said to put a bridle on it.
Just as we put and bridle with a bit in a horse's mouth to control that horse, God wants to be the bridle of my tongue. Since I have let God help me control my tongue, my life has been a whoe lot better. Let God help you today with your devouring tongue.

Four Suggestions/Goals for 2010 by Pastor Benny Reppond
(1) Put God first and love Him more than we do today. "Thou shall have no other god before me."

(4) Bring others to the knowledge of Jesus and His goodness.
