The city conciders a name change for Jefferson Highway, to Jefferson Boulevard however, after hearing from Colleen Rongey, owner of Colleen's Frame & Art, this may be reconsidered. "Before any change is made, we need to consider the history", says Rongey.
Our address, 9029 Jefferson Highway, The Old Jefferson Highway, is historic in that it is one of the oldest highways in the nation. Still called Jefferson Highway here and there along the old route that began in the late 1800's.
Jefferson Highway was built as the Gulf to Lakes Highway and it's beginning was in Chalmette, Louisiana. It followed along the Mississippi River and Indian trails, winding its way to the Great Lakes Region and Canada. As years went by, sections of Old Jefferson Highway were renamed while other sections kept the original name of Jefferson Highway. Passing along the eastern side of the Mississippi River, branches of the highway looped across Arkansas to Eureka Springs and back along the White River to join itself again and weaving in and out along the Mississippi to the Canadian border. Part of this old road passes across the Arkansas Ozarks and one section later was renamed Ozarks Scenic Highway Seven Byway. Near where my grandparents homesteaded land in the 1870's and where I was born and spent growing up years, what a nice surprise to find that our shop is located on this same Old Jefferson Highway.
