The Louisiana Karate Association (LKA) is the oldest karate club in the south, and is the headquarters of the Japan Karate Association American Federation (JKA/AF). It was established in 1965 and has as its chief instructor, Takayuki Mikami, 8th degree black belt. Mr. Mikami, a native of Japan, was the first certified instructor sent overseas by the Japan Karate Association (JKA). He was the All-Japan Kumite (free fighting) champion twice and three time All-Japan Kata (forms) champion. In 1963 he moved to the United States and in 1965 he founded the All South Karate Federation.
His style of karate is Shotokan -- a Japanese style that is characterized by strong focus (concentrated moment of energy) made possible by full hip motion and total body commitment to the technique. This is formal training, based upon traditional teaching methods, that gradually builds up ones physical condition and mental concentration.
