9:30 am & 11:15 am
We begin a season of holidays from the world religions and secular celebrations also. What are thesimilarities ofthese celebrations? What is it wecelebrate, dread, anticipate, or become anxious about at this time of the year? We welcome The Reverend Randy Nichols, frequent pulpit guest and executive director of Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless. Guitarist Kevin Johnson will sing and play special music for our services.
The tree will be up and ready for us all. We have carols to sing. Our minister explains how the worst can be transformed into the best. Our choir presents a new setting of O Little Town of Bethlehem, along with a Baroque ensemble playing music for two recorders, harpsichord, and viola da gamba. Come ye, in merry measure.
Turn the historical Jesus into the meek and mild and this Christ, who never crawls out of the crib, is rendered banal. But the courageous and revolutionary Jesus is worth our time and attention. Unitarians and Universalists have never fully given up on him. Our minister tells why. Our choir, along with LSU string ensemble Paula Bujes, violin; Teodora Peeva, viola; and Susannah Montandon, cello, provides festive music this morning. Bring a friend to church
The spontaneous pageant returns to our church with children, youth, and adults cast on the spot for a dramatization of the Nativity, with carols and fine fellowship at both services. Bring friends and family for unrepeatable pageantry moments.
The morning includes some musical surprises.
Join us as we remember many who died in 2010 and how they touched the lives of various members of our congregation. A jazz combo along with vocalists Marie Flowers, Helen Hoffpauir and Cathy McManus will honor musical celebrities who have died this past year.
We recognize the poignant meaning of shadow and when we do, we realize we dare not regard shadow like the dust we shake from our sandals. At the close of each service this morning, we will engage, like last year, in a ritual of letting go to prepare ourselves for the new year. Our minister returns to the pulpit.
